3. The Warehouse Gallery cafe is a truly unique site that has been existed more then 100 years in Jalan Tun H S Lee. If you experience the space, you will notice the elevator skeleton still in place. Exposed roof structures on the top floor evidenced the tranquillity of space.
TheWarehose do have a very good fine dining, music and schedule funky activities at night too.

With a clear identical background of an existing pre-war warehouses and shophouses and colored by livable cultured microarchitecture lifestyle (Azimin Tazilan 2010) is definite to be preserved at curtain extend. Again, some authority and people outside there just ignore about future generation and sustainable development in Kuala Lumpur..Sustainable city is just not about to put a better infrastructure and 'green tech' in place, but to respond well to the existing local culture needs, public and city landscape for a better eco system in future lifetsyle...

This snippets video reflects the debate on the acquisition on the pre-war building, old shophouses, warehouses in Jalan Sultan, KL for the new construction of the underground MRT. Thinkers and innovators out there can come-out a better proposals if they study carefully on site.

1. Finally my short project of another micro-architecture building has just been completed and launched.

2. This a very special green building that relates to green and zero waste management and activities.

3. A jointly research project between UKM and Alam Flora has come to the next ultimate stage which witness the first Solar Powered building known as UKM Recycling Centre or I shall said the fist ZERO energy microarchitecure building has just completed in a very short time and proudly said is in Malaysia @ UKM Bangi, Selangor!

4. Now we can see the adrenalin of people of UKM to support this zero waste program under the VC's vision on green campus drives rapidly. As the vice chancellor (Academic and International Affairs) Prof Dato’ Ir Dr Hassan Basri said that UKM aims to be a zero waste campus within 10 years.

5. I would elaborate the design detail and features on this particular microarhitecture T8 building in my next post blog. For sure this is a very low budget cost excercise but with a humble design approach with maximum output.

6. For now I would like to take the opportunity to thanks:

3. Sharmilla quotes: 'Practicality, coupled with green sensibilities, defines this architect’s work..'. and "Sustainability, is key in developing microarchitectural elements". I guess its not easy thou; by knowing the politics-bureaucracy culture in this country..

4. The Micro articles does mean a big message here. The true green and sustainable has been existed in this country long time ago. The Malay vernacular houses has been survives more than 90-100 years old. Much more longer before the Malaysia GBI (Green Building Indexed) that has been formed up since 2008.

5.Its matter how you define and redefine the 'green factor' here. Some 'green' elements does not require expensive method to enjoy; but some does; which suits your budget.

Apa sebenarnya teknologi hijau? Adakah Hijau adalah sejenis kod warna yang disukai ramai atau hanya kepada segolongan mata?

Tahun 2010 merupakan tahun yanag di war-warkan oleh pihak kerajaan Malaysia sebagai negara berteknologi hijau. Sebab itu sebuah pameran antarabangsa IGEM 2010 (International Greentech & Eco Product Conference + Exhibition 2010) yang dilangsungkan buat pertama kaliniya di Malaysia di KLCC convention center begitu mendapat sambutan di luar dugaan oleh pihak kementerian, luar dan dalam, para usahawantekno, venture-capitalis & awam. Mungkin kerana perasaan curiosity dengan apa yang dimaksudkan dengan teknologi hijau dan produknya telah meyakinkan golongan tersebut mengunjunginya.

Ironiknya ketika saya berada di sana jarang sekali ketemu golongan dari pihak PBT seperti DBKL, MPPJ, MPSJ, MBS atau seangkatan dengannya. Apa yang pasti permulaan teknologi hijau ini seakan memberi nafas baru kepada pengusaha-pengusaha baru dalam bidang teknologi seumpamanya ataupun akan menjadi pengahalang 'periuk nasi' oleh-sesetengah pihak berkuasa....

Hijau dalam ertikata semasa ini perlu diidefinasikan sebaiknya bukan hanya mengikut kepada sesetengah pihak yang mementingkan kocek sendiri. Ini akan saya jelaskan dalam artikel akan datang.

Sehingga ketemulagi penghuraian tenologi hijau khususnya dalam arena senibina mikro @ senibina-kudip@ microatchitecture..

Micro-Architecture: Street Furniture Facility Components

1. This is an International proceeding paper on my writing and research about micro-architecture on street furniture. Published on International Furniture Conference, Kuala Lumpur. The opening special key note by Karim Rashid: Decembar 2008, Issn 978-983-42226-3-5 pg.21

2. The idea of street furniture as a part of micro-architecture segments is crucial within public facilities. This includes street benches, sign marking, pedestrian lighting, bins, etc. On my recent paper on micro-architecture; that focus on sustainable street furniture; describes what best it applies.

3.Most of the authority or council in Malaysian township have overlook how important this facilities serves to pedestrians. Seldom we can found an appropriate numbers of street furnitures in a high density areas.

4. Hardly I have found out that a good street furniture design in this area. Most of the suppliers or vendors who supply these street furniture are not sensitive enough on the usage of sustainable materials. Easily I could discover the application of a mild steel with typical steel painting on the structures which can't last long and promotes corrosion easily. Seems most of these current street furniture in Malaysia's focus towards 'decoration' rather the function.

5, Street furniture at Putrajaya which promotes silent crowds looks very pleasing and appealing to users- both function and aesthetic. The steel frames are well treated and natural solid timber plank are consider good design in this city. Nevertheless if I could see this good street furniture can be placed at Jalan TAR, Petaling Street, or others busy retail areas in Malaysia that needed badly; the public will greatly appreciated ...

Malaysian Mobile Architecture aka Micro-Architecture

1. The other unique micro-architecture in my research data consist of group which can be identified as 'mobile-architecture'. In micro-architecture I had discovered all these micro units can be classified as 'temporary' build-in as it is. This is because all micro-architecture structures unit of appearence are easily can be build, dismantle, shifted or 'removed' from the site typology compare to typical building or architecture by definition (Azimin Tazilan 2009).

2. The question begs me recently: can we see this particular structures easily in the metroplitan city such as Putrajaya or Cyberjaya?

3. In Putrajaya a new Malaysian federal administrative centre so call 'well planned' city are hardly and sadly can be seen this truly Malaysian easy-going lifestyle culture such as street-hawking food activity like pisang-goreng (fried-banana), rojak pasembor (mixed-pasembor), cendol (local mixed colored ice with coconut milk dish) or even laksa to serve the hunger pedestrian that passes by.

4. This issue also has been mentioned earlier by M Tajuddin M Rasdi (2009) in STAR article column; about we re loosing the urban-eco lifestyle as we can't see those vendor unit on streets and covered walkway as we use to enjoyed and lived happily in those days in Kuala Lumpur or other older township.

5. If there are a new concept of planning undertakes in Malaysia townships; such as a city of Kuala Lumpur, Kuala Terengganu, Langkawi, Taiping and others city or town; they have already starts their so call 'organized planning' over the existing street vendors (mostly individual street-mobile vendors) which to be shifted to new 'superficial' massive complex / building such as; grouped food courts or bazzar centre in town.

6. Ironically most of this new complexes seem doesn't support the original functions of the existing needs of street mobile-architecture or micro-architecture vendors or even helps to build an eco-street cultural urbanscape.

Local news paper on related issues on new hawking centre at Medan Selera Batu (near Kg Baru), Kuala Lumpur. Architecture building looks impressive, but not the functions!

7. Easily because the new complexes completely serves different kind of functions, namely:

for group vendors (like pasar malam or central market vendors)
different sets of customer-non specific client
built for lasting structures, not business (single street vendor)

8. This dosent support trully on our culture and micro-economic background as I or we use to get our fancy 'snacks', enjoying eating steam-boat, foot massage, or even repaired shoes from individual vendors at street side & five foot walk (kaki-lima) in Malaysia.

9. I have to agreed on A Samad Hadi (2003) (a Professor in City/Urban Sustainability Research Lestari UKM) writings that also support to Moughtin's (1999, 2001) thoughts; that smaller activities like this can promote the eco-system of suburbs to support their family and country economics.

10. Its time for me to share some thoughts to educate people, the government and respective authoritan & their perspective on how important street micro-architecture to the 1Malaysia nation landscape..

Affordable Eco-Sustainable Public Toilet: Micro-Architecture

1. Above photo that have I took at Nilai, N. Sembilan, Malaysia shown a simple & practical idea of having a washroom near roadside at village/kampung area. This little toilet was built besides a car-wash services corner at the village. By using a 4 wooden stick poles, wrapped around with a PVC canvas screen, raised floor by using a recycle container packaging wood, and water container provided inside is just as good to release your 'light nature calls'. This facility structure which I categorize as Malaysian micro-architecture is a true mobile, light-weight architecture are quite similar to Richard Horden's (1999, 2008) defines his microarchitecture but not taking a consideration on the industry or high profile technology driven. Of cause we are always can argued the issues on hygiene, material, privacy, & etc for this kind of toilet. But after all, is this what we could call a sustainable toilet?

2.This trigger my mind, some how human just need to go back by their basic necessity, especially during the 'emergency' of nature-call. As most of us could see the public toilet issues has been brought to the Malaysian Ministry of Housing and Local Authority’s interest until they have launched a specific campaign under theme, “Heading to Clean Toilet Culture” (Ministry and Minister text campaign 2004). This awareness campaign was directly to stake hold in order to speed up the government’s message to the public. It has been reported that the government has spent RM31.6 million in expenditure within 2003-2004, just to build and upgrade the public toilet for the local authority councils in Malaysia (Azimin Tazilan 2005).

The question that will be pondered around is, what is the actual strategic plan to improve current toilet conditions, and what is the future plans to create more of a sustainable toilet in the country or region?

3. The Super Hi-tech Toilet in KL areas

In Malaysia there is an island type of public toilet, which I classify as a micro-architecture unit due to the architecture building archetype. Most of these unit has been place at remote public areas simply because the typical toilets are smelly and didn't look 'avant-garde' to public.

To date a a few 'hi-tech public toilet' in built-up size +- 2.25m x 5.25m x 3.25m height, which cost almost RM400-450k per unit have been built around Kuala Lumpur city centre (Anon. 2006, News Straits Time 20 Jan 2009); This implementation, I could see to overcome and to educate public for using a very clean or modern environment of toilets. However this hi-tech toilets that I have been visited recently; only have a:

+2 units cubicles, +1 cleaner/maintenance counter space

+Ventilation:using a 2 split units Air Cond. (ceiling mounted, may produce a hi-energy consumption)

+Material built: Tempered glass + Stainless steel body (very good sustainable materias indeed)

+System: Automation, with auto door, wash and dryer, etc

+Service charge: RM0.30 (if not mistaken), for 15 minutes usage, and the door will automaticaly open.

What I did discover during the visit this hi-tech toilet is surprise me, because you can't use the toilet after 5 users used it earlier. It will be disable automatically, and the cleaner assistant have to do a manual clean up, etc. (Estimated maybe around 15 minutes). Secondly I saw an additional blower fan (after market product) infront of the cleaner that blowing to her face directly. When I ask her whether the space is warm to be working over there; she said the fan is to blow away the bad smells during each time if someone using or auto-flushing the toilets.

Now this makes me wondering what's actually happening to this so call 'hi-tech Japanse technology' toilets in Malaysia? What i did discover the exhaust fan from the toilet actually is blowing out directly above the cleaner's head as infront of the counter...

3. Lesson & Solutions:

Think simple, functional but yet innovative way and you won't go wrong. Generally the main typical problems that have been raised about public toilet in Malaysia mainly at urban and suburban areas are: ventilation, natural lighting, security and privacy (Azimin 2006). I have wrote a paper published at Bung Hatta University (Azimin et. al 2005) describing how we can produce an eco-sustainable public toilets in Malaysia and the region.

On my latest invention on ECSTRACT™ (an eco-sustainable active public lavatory), I have addressed all the issues and the idea of sustainability design approaches. I have always been inspired by our local Malay vernacular architecture houses that I use to stay during my childhood days at Parit Buntar, Batu Kurau and Selama, Perak. By utilizing the idea of an ultra energy such as photovoltaic power, rainwater harvesting system, landscape, homogenous + natural base material applications; it has been a great tremendous elements that actually contributes the green technology application. The most important, this patent-filed ECSTRACT™ is more economically to built, cheaper and less maintenance...

Abstract

Streets micro-architecture constructs are compact structures such as stalls, kiosks, phone booths, and toilets that one finds as one walks on the streets, alleys, walkways, pedestrian malls and such. Because of its smallness, they are usually seen to be unimportant in the development of townships and cities. In this paper a series of street investigation of human behavior within the retail built environment projected a unique results on how formal and informal street space is cultured. As Jacob (1993) stated a great street should have characters, therefore this event can bond a specific street identity within and would become a tourism product besides the daily retail activity. Micro-architecture, however, actually gives the first real impression of a town, city or country to visitors to a particular place or locale. Its impact is immediate and opinions are formed of the place and its people quite instantaneously. A lot of street micro-architecture are public amenities such as toilets and squares. Base on current phenomenology research studied, it gives a better justification on sustainable elements approach on street microahitecture in Malaysia. Thus, in this research and practise base paper, it is imperative to study and understand its functions, aesthetics and design elements so that a sustainable architectural plan and street identity can be developed for the comfort of locals and visitors alike.

1. Hmm hari ini saya hendak cuba memahami konsep sabar dan 'cut-off point-'. Untuk takrifan anologinya, saya mengandaikannya seperti pergi trip-pancing-pendek. 'Sabar' dimaksudkan dalam New Oxford American dictionary:

2. Apa yang terjadi hari ini merupakan cubaan ke-5 saya di sebuah pusat memancing air-masin di Kelang Utara, Pond no2, (sebelahan muara) selama tempoh 3 jam setiap kali berkunjung. Rekod untuk kolam khusus ini begitu menghampakan belum berjaya menaikkan ikan.

3. Walaupun ada 'strike' namun tali 20 pound Aijiking yang digunakan putus lagi! Di tempat lain cubaan paling maksimum kali ke-2 pasti akan dapat ikan atau resultnya...Namun bukan di tempat 'mistik' ini. Yang peliknya 20% pemancing lain yang berkunjung akan mendapat hasil yang kekadang tidak masuk akal bilangannya. Ikan yang dinaikkan; Ikan jenahak, siakap merah, putih, kerapu, bawal semuanya lebih 2kg ke atas.

4. Disebabkan tema kreativiti sudah menjadi darah daging saya: sudah semesti saya mencuba pelbagai cara atau teknik memancing. Dari segi teknikal seperti penggunaan tali 80 pound, teknik apungan, teknik dasar, berubah lubuk, malah teknik 'pasar malam'- iaitu memancing di bawah sangkar ikan turut dipraktiskan! Namun 'nasib' atau rezeki masih belum berpihak kepada saya.

5. Kini sudah tiba masaya saya 'ban' atau berkunjung ke kolam tersebut. jika saya berada lebih lama di kolam itu akan mengakibatkan kerugian dari segi:masa bayaran jam, belian umpan lebih, belian junk food, sun-burn dan 'tempered'. Mungkiin saya akan melawat tapak lapangan pancingan lain pula

6. Dalam design proposal (architecture & such), konsep yang sama perlu diaplikasikan seperti di atas. Perahan idea, membuat kajian, sketsa, dan drawing presentation akan sentiasa memenatkan dan memeritkan pereka. (Bagi yang serius bekerja..)

7. Jika, 2-3 kali selepas design review atau presentation kalau tak menarik perhatian oleh studio koordiantor atau pensyarah atau projek klien; sudah semestinya jangan menggunakan lapangan yang sama, tukar saja design atau cari 'lubuk-padang' baru' or take a break !

8. Bagi yang membuat 'real-life' projek proposal; rasionalnya selepas 2-3 kali buat design proposal presentation, kalau respon keputusan klien lambat, 'tidak pasti', atau perlu lebih masa..hmm sudah sampai masanya beralih tempat, strategi dan 'cut-off-point'!. Ini adalah baik demi menjaga motivasi peribadi, sumber, kewangan, masa dan KPI, time to move on!

9. Industri kolam-ikan yang berjaya dan architecture tak banyak berbeza dari segi strategi pasarannya. Macam Nikos Papastergiadis (2001) dalam artikel 'Traces Left in Cities' di buku Poetics in Architecture; dalam eksplorasinya dikenali sebagai urban wasteland: yang mendemonstrasi intimasi perkaitan antara "ART" dan 'ruang tersedia' dan membayangkan bagaimana sebuah impian baru boleh mengabungkannya dalam ruang industri terbiar....

10. Contohnya macam pekan rumah-kedai era-awal Simpang Pulai, Perak yang terbiar kesan arus perubahan ekonomi dan pembinaan laluan baru high-way (PLUS) langsung mematikan pekan kecil tersebut. Bagi saya senibina blok rumah kedai kiri dan kanan ini memang indah karektornya. Hendak dibangunkan pusat komersil harian memang susah. Kenapa tidak dibangunkan saja sebagai hotel-bed-breakfast secara 'rekabentuk butik' (boutique hotel)..?

'Pintu bernafas' bagi keselesaan penghuni

Pembinaan rumah moden yang kadang-kala tidak menitikberatkan keadaan cuaca sesebuah negara menyebabkan suasana dalam rumah tidak selesa bagi penghuninya.

Apabila penghuni amat menitikberatkan keselamatan, ciri estetika dan keselesaan sesebuah bangunan mula diketepikan.

Pembinaan jeriji besi dan tembok pagar yang tinggi menjadikan rumah kelihatan tidak menarik daripada luar.

Jika direnung kembali rumah tradisional Melayu dahulu kala didirikan lengkap dengan konsep pengudaraan dan pencahayaan tanpa meninggalkan ciri-ciri keselamatan.

Menginap di rumah tradisional Melayu milik datuknya di Taiping, Perak semasa kecil dulu mencetuskan ilham kepada Pensyarah dan Penyelidik Kanan Jabatan Senibina, Fakulti Kejuruteraan dan Alam Bina, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Azimin S. Mohd Tazilan membina Breathing Door atau 'Pintu Bernafas.'

"Semasa di kampung, kita tidak memerlukan penghawa dingin tetapi keadaan tetap selesa sama ada siang atau malam," katanya.

Malah beliau mendapat idea membina breathing door semasa penghawa dingin berpusat di pejabatnya sering rosak.

Keadaan dalam bilik yang tidak selesa dan panas menyebabkan beliau sering membuka pintu terutama apabila pelajar dan tetamu berkunjung.

"Malah saya juga terpaksa membuka pintu setiap masa dan mengurangkan keselesaan pada sendiri," katanya.

Sebagai arkitek dan pelukis yang mendapat pendidikan di Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) dan Manchester Metropolitan University, United Kingdom, Azimin mendapati reka bentuk pelan rumah tradisional Melayu amat mapan dan lestari pada cuaca tropika.

Kajian yang dimulakan pada September 2005 bagi dinding bernafas tidak dapat diteruskan memandangkan kos yang agak tinggi.

Azimin kemudian beralih untuk membangunkan breathing door yang amat diperlukan oleh setiap rumah di seluruh pelosok dunia.

Masih menggunakan konsep rumah tradisional Melayu tetapi diubahsuai mengikut kos dan kesesuaian.

Membina sesuatu bagi menyelesaikan masalah, Azimin mula memikirkan rupa bentuk dan ciri keselamatan tanpa meninggalkan estetika.

"Saya melihat kepada jeriji pintu yang mencacatkan pandangan dan rantai besi di pintu juga boleh dipotong semasa penghuni membuka pintu," katanya.

Breathing door yang dihasilkan bukan saja boleh mempunyai tempat ruang udara yang boleh diselaraskan - dibuka dan ditutup apabila diperlukan.

Justeru, pada masa siang ketika cuaca panas penghuni rumah boleh membuka ruang udara bagi membolehkan udara masuk.

Kajian menunjukkan breathing door dipasang di pintu depan dan belakang dapat mengurangkan suhu sehingga 20 hingga 35 peratus.

"Lubang udara tadi bukan saja boleh memberikan udara masuk tetapi juga penghuni boleh mendapatkan pancaran matahari.

"Ini memberikan suasana yang lebih bersih dan selesa dalam rumah dengan udara dan cahaya yang boleh beredar di dalamnya," jelasnya.

Azimin berkata, dalam kegawatan ekonomi, penghuni boleh menjimatkan kos tenaga daripada pengguna penghawa dingin, kipas atau lampu.

Bukan itu saja, breathing door juga mempunyai ciri keselamatan seperti tahan api dan dilengkapi dengan jeriji yang di bina dalaman.

"Ini akan memperkukuhkan ciri keselamatan sesebuah pintu tanpa meninggalkan keindahannya," katanya.

Sesuai bagi semua premis - rumah pangsa, apartmen, kondominium, teres, banglo mahupun pejabat - breathing door dapat memberikan keselesaan kepada penghuninya.

Penghuni juga tidak perlu bimbang dengan keselamatan kerana mereka boleh terus melihat pengunjung yang datang tanpa perlu membuka pintu.

Malah dari segi keselamatan selain jeriji dalaman, terdapat dua lagi kunci tambahan di bahagian atas dan bawah.

Jika pada peringkat awal Azimin hanya membina lubang udara yang biasa dengan kos yang rendah tetapi bagi tujuan komersial beliau membina pintu yang mempunyai ukiran dan kerawang seakan-akan dinding rumah tradisional Melayu.

Mengaplikasi lima konsep dalam rekaannya iaitu tutup, gelongsor, gembira, selamat dan tanpa gangguan.

Breathing door yang mendapat pelbagai anugerah semasa di pamerkan di luar negara bukan saja sesuai di negara tropika tetapi juga di negara empat musim.

Mengenai pengkomersialan, Azimin berkata, breathing door sedang dalam proses dipatenkan di negara ini dan beberapa negara di Asia, Asia Barat dan Eropah.

"Kami menyasarkan breathing door akan berada di pasaran tempatan selewat-lewatnya akhir tahun ini," katanya yang mendapat banyak pertanyaan mengenainya dari dalam dan luar negara.

Toilet design wins gold medal

AN ECO-SUSTAINABLE lavatory won Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) a gold medal at the British Invention Show 2007 recently.

Azimin Tazilan's innovation focused on low cost, practicality, commercial feasibility and environmental friendliness.

“The shortcomings of public toilets in Malaysia motivated me to come up with this design,” said Azimin.

“Many public toilets are vandalised, have poor lighting and require high maintenance. My toilet design addresses all of these problems.”

Named as the Eco-Sustainable Street Active Public Lavatory or ECSTRACT for short, Azimin's zero energy design utilises daylight and solar energy.

Well ventilated and spacious, the good air circulation creates a natural drying process to limit mishaps that may come from slippery surfaces.

“I got inspirations for my designs from traditional Malay architecture,” he said. “Kampung houses have many openings and this ensures a good inflow of fresh air.”

Azimin also won a gold medal award for his low-energy multifunction door.

Named “Breathing Dorr” and made from wood, it serves as a ventilator, a source of natural lighting, a view panel and a safety device medium.

The presence of many vents that can be adjusted differentiates Azimin's design from the conventional door.

His innovations also won the Engineering Faculty lecturer a special award - Double Gold Consumer 2007.

Azimin is looking to commercialise his innovations and a local developer has already shown interest in buying a large number of his Breathing Dorr.

Assoc Prof Dr Mohamad Osman, of UKM’s Science and Technology Faculty, won one gold and one silver award for his research on hydroxycitric acid (HCA) extraction from the Roselle plant.

HCA acid is believed to be able to help people control their weight by inhibiting the body's ability to store fat and encouraging the human anatomy to use existing body fat for energy.

“I'm glad that my hard work has paid off. A Daily Mail headline shortly before the invention show that said that obesity is deadlier than smoking possibly generated more interest in my research,” he said.

Meanwhile, Prof Dr Azimahtol Hawariah Lope Pihie, also from the Science and Technology Faculty, won a gold award for her work on CholestaCare, a pharmaceutical product for the heart made from dragon fruit skin.

With her success, UKM took home five awards from five entries.

“This is the first time that UKM has received awards for every entry,” said vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Sharifah Hapsah Syed Hasan Shahabudin.

Previously, she added, all UKM researchers could participate and the quality of the entries varied greatly at times.

“We imposed strict criteria this year and only products that had won national level competitions were allowed to be submitted for overseas exhibitions.

“UKM entries obtained high scores in commercial value, level of innovation, purposefulness and originality in design,” added Prof Sharifah Hapsah.

Azimin's ECSTRACT lavatory, she said, would be constructed first in UKM.

The Malaysian presence was definitely felt at the just-ended British Invention Show.

FROM breathing doors and designer eggs to an anti-ageing gel and bio-ceramic bone implants, the mind-boggling display of gadgets beggared belief.

There was even an electronic nose and tongue device to “tantalise” the crowd at the four-day British Invention Show, which ended yesterday.

Then again, it was Britain’s largest expo to showcase the latest inventions, innovations and new technology from around the globe.

And a group of Malaysians were among the 250 inventors from 17 countries who presented their unique ideas for the benefit of mankind.

Led by Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM’s) Dr M. Ratnasamy, the 30 researchers were from Universiti Teknologi Mara (Uitm), Universiti Malaya, USM, UKM, UPM, Universiti Malaysia Perlis (Unimap), Mardi and the National Defence University.

Azimin Samsul Mohd Tazilan literally breathes life into his innovative door, which is based on the traditional kampung house design. “I was inspired by my grandparent’s house in Selama, Perak, which is breezy and has plenty of natural lighting,” said the UKM lecturer/researcher.

Azimin noted that houses with conventional doors were often warm and stuffy due to lack of good ventilation. “Imagine both the front and back doors closed and somebody’s cooking in the kitchen,” he said, describing a typical Malaysian home.

He said his breathing door comprised four pieces “sandwiched” together – a perforated inner layer, a movable screen panel, a safety metal/polymer plate and an external unit.

The unique combination allows for easy air movement with cross-ventilation, natural lighting, privacy, safety and health, he explained. “This is a low-tech, cost-effective but smarter way to cool the house by up to 30%,” he added.

Azimin said his aim was to design a functional house complete with breathing ceilings, walls and roof within five years.
